This section is dedicate to all types of European Initiatives that are related to the research on rare diseases.

The European Life Sciences Infrastructure for Biological Information

The mission of ELIXIR is to construct and operate a sustainable infrastructure for biological information in Europe to support life science research and its translation to medicine and the environment, the bio-industries and society. Europe is home to many world-leading bioinformatics institutes and services, which currently provide data resources used by academia, industry and medical experts in their research. ELIXIR is the infrastructure that helps to coordinate, sustain and integrate these bioinformatics resources across Europe.

By linking biomedical and biological data resources, ELIXIR will facilitate understanding in rare diseases and help drive earlier diagnosis, improved disease management and preventive strategies. ELIXIR
Nodes have expertise in running major European data archives, storing data from large-scale sequencing and cohort studies. These resources provide a critical mass of invaluable reference data, which are crucial for the medical diagnosis of rare diseases.
